|Join me in my efforts to support Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina!|
|This is a true challenge - in the spring, I will hike 26.5 miles of the Sauratown Trail in an effort to grant more wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.|
In March 2016, our then 9-year old son Shay was diagnosed with bone cancer. One phone call from the doctor changed our plans for school, basketball, and soccer practice to plans for hospital stays, bone scans, chemotherapy, and surgery. For 8 months, fabulous doctors and nurses at UNC Children's Hospital took care of Shay, but he spent his time hooked up to an IV pole, talking and thinking about chemo, meds, tests, surgeries, and physical therapy.
We are so blessed that Shay is now cancer-free and well after such a long, difficult year. As I write this, we are celebrating his recovery by living out the wish he was granted by Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina in November. Unlike all those months Shay and I spent away from home and away from the rest of our family, we are all together enjoying a huge indoor waterpark and skiing in the Poconos! We will be forever grateful to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for blessing us with this opportunity to reconnect with each other and treat Shay to some fantastic kid-time that he missed for so long.
I am a terrible fundraiser, and I don't at all enjoy asking for money. But I am eager to hike 26.5 miles and raise as much money as I can for Make-A-Wish Eastern NC. You see, Shay is not the only Wish Kid I've known. The first was a beautiful little girl named Marlie, who wished to visit Disney World. Marlie's family has beautiful memories and pictures of that trip. Tragically, they no longer have Marlie. She passed away just before her 11th birthday after bravely battling a rare genetic disease. I can't even begin to imagine her family's loss, but I know that Make-A-Wish gave Marlie and her family a priceless gift.
There are so many charities, and you cannot donate to them all. But on behalf of families like mine and Marlie's, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering even the smallest donation!
